Over the weekend one of my friends attended an adult party. She was really looking forward to it because she thought it would be a lot of fun. I was suppose to go with her, but my weekend was pretty bad so I skipped it.

She had fun, but thought the hostess was incredibly rude. Apparently in the middle of the party while everyone was giggling and having fun, the rep scolded them. Told them "come on ladies let's get serious". As a result of her attitude, several walked out without ordering and my friend didn't book a party of her own (which she was planning to and has been talking about this for WEEKS!).

I guess my thoughts are if I was at a party like this, I'd be giggling too. My understanding is these parties are suppose to be fun. Because of the nature of the product, most would laugh when seeing these things.

But on the other hand, I guess I can see the point of the rep as well. This is her business, and it's not a joke. Although I do believe she crossed the line scolding her guests.

So what's your thoughts? Was it rude of the guests to laugh, or rude of the rep to squash their fun?

Um, I think it was extremely rude of the rep! My goodness, you go with the flow at your shows! If people are acting silly and laughing, then give them something else to laugh about! If they want to be serious, let them be serious. But don't ever scold them!

Wow! I'm sure that rep won't go very far in her business....

I used to have a Pampered Chef consultant that was a friend. She did a pretty good job, but she HATED it when people talked through her presentation. If they started talking, she'd stop what she was doing and just stare at them, sort of like a teacher! Embarassed

She couldn't figure out why she couldn't get bookings, so I told her. I said that women like to go to parties to have fun... not sit and not make a sound. She said that she was telling them important information about the product and they needed to listen. I told her that she needed to lighten up and have fun at her shows.... I said it in a very nice way so that she wouldn't get mad!

Well, she listened to me! She even started playing games, which she never did before, and she became a very successful PC rep! She quit a few years later when her kids got older, but she was able to pay her mortgage with her income from PC every single month. That's pretty good, in my opinion!

That's a WONDERFUL example Bev!

Again I suppose I can see it from your friend's point of view, but you are absolutely right. If they really want to know that "important information", they'll ask at the end right? So what if we have to repeat things - the reps are there to answer questions no matter what!

Well that is just odd.

I have only attended one party and this chic was so up to speed with the crowd she had in front of her. We had a ton of women and we'd all known each other a long time. We were super happy to see each other and with no kids that we were giggly before it even started.

She was a kindergarten teacher. She promptly told us that and then her second sentence was outrageous and I won't repeat it here because it would offend some. But this was perfect for the crowd she had, so we all had a blast.

If she had told us not to be giggly she probably would have gotten a foot firmly planted somewhere. We are giggly at a candle party for goodness sakes. Laughing

The rep must have had some bad experience prior or is new. Man our rep made a ton of money by letting us giggle through the whole thing. She did a great job of calming people down so she could talk though. I guess it's in the comfort of talking about the products. If you really aren't comfortable, then maybe you can't deal with the talk around you about it?

Too bad for the rep and especially the hostess. My friend had huge sales and parties booked because the rep rocked.

Speaking of which, I'm going to have an online party next week that I will post later. I just booked it last night so this is a timely post. lol

That was my thoughts exactly Bev - you let the guests decide "how" the party is going to go!

And what's wrong w/ allowing the guests to have all the fun they want and when it gets to something the rep feels is "important". Why can't she say something like:

I'm so glad you ladies are having such a great time. This is what makes my parties such a success. However, if you could give me just 5 minutes of your un-divided attention, we'll get right back to the fun stuff.

Or something along those lines anyway .. but yeah, never scold your guests!

Take care,

I think I know the rest of that line LOL. I just watched Coyote Ugly the other night and the start of that line is in the movie. So yeah, I have an idea of what she said. Laughing

LOVE this line Anita! That's a perfect way to politely direct the crowd towards something important.

But I think you ladies are right about everything - it's the guests that decide which direction the party goes. After all, they are the ones holding the money!

HEhe, I'm the one who went to this party....and I must admit, things were absolutely awesome, up until the rep told us to "not make any jokes about this, as it's a serious matter and we all just need to get through this together". The lady I had been sitting by had previously pulled a wad of cash ($200 to be exact) and giggling had told us she was saving up for this party. After the rep made the comment (amongst some pretty nasty looks I must say), she looked at me and said, well, this isn't fun anymore, I'm out of here. To top it off, 2 more people left right after her. Several of the women even said, it just wasn't fun or intriquing anymore after that. Her sales were drastically cut short that night. Even the hostess wasn't pleased with her rep and said she would be putting in a comment form online. Not just that kind of party, but any of them, once you get that many women together in one room, you're bound to have something flying...LOL. What better way to break the ice with your guests and invite them to share something you should be passionate about? It's not like we were being rude or obnoxious. Just curious women who had questions and sometimes comments....that HELPED the rep. We were saying the good things about certain products that we had personal experiences with. The rep just thought this unacceptable and because of it, she lost out on at least $200 cash that night alone, plus the 2 women who left after that, PLUS a party! Seriously....

Exactly, if she'd embraced it her sales would have been well over doubled. Heck, we sold most of the products people bought because we told them how awesome they were. lol We bought a lot and our wish list for the next party was big as well. It was a mad dash to coordinate calendars so we could be at the next party. Laughing

how RUDE!
of the rep that is...
geeeez especially at those parties.. why be serious..
sounds like SHE may have probs in her own sexual life or something that it has to be so "serious"
too bad she doesn't have a clue how that affected her party sales and her income!
tsk tsk

I am sorry, but an adult party has some gigglers! Some have never been to that type of party and not only are amazed at what they see, they giggle at the possibilities of what they can DO!

LOL! Please laugh so loud that the consultant can hear you!
Smile

As for talking and such at home parties, if you cannot have fun, then maybe home parties are not for you!

Maybe the rep was still not comfortable with her product, no matter how long she had been doing this.

I have attended several adult themed parties and we always had fun (laughing, giggling and teasing one another) during the party. I believe an "adult" party should be fun.

I would file a complaint against the rep with the home office. She needs to loosen up!

OH yay! This is right up my alley! First off, the hostess was rude. Yes, adult parties do have educational content in them, but first and foremost, they are for FUN. I WANT people to laugh and giggle at my parties. If I don't get people laughing, I know that's a sign that something is wrong! (Have not had that yet!) I get people laughing in the first 7 minutes, and believe me, it's not about something serious, it's something seriously funny! Lol. There is some "serious" information at these parties, but come on, it's for fun! I purposely have my own stories, puns, jokes, and so on to make it fun. As far as the rep goes, oh my, I am sorry that she was not fun and WAY to serious. Before I got started in this business I had been to a real dud of a party. I am really glad I did get to see a party that was not a fun one because it showed me everything NOT to do.

How could you not laugh and giggle at adult parties?

All of the advertising and promotion of those types of parties have always boasted about them being a girls night out...laugh, giggle and spend time with your gal pals while shopping. Isn't that basically the concept?

I would not like a rep like that doing an adult party for me...heck, I probably would of asked Ms Rep to leave.
