Getting Organized for the Summer
by Anita DeFrank & Kara Kelso
With summer comes limited work time, since the kids are out of school and demanding attention more. One of the keys to balancing work and home during the summer is organization and motivation.
The more organized you are, the faster you can get your work done. Instead of fumbling each day wondering what you need to do, you just jump right into your tasks and get it done. This is extremly helpful on the days where you only have an hour or two before running off to a family activity.
To start you'll need to make a list. What exactly needs to be done? What is going to get you farther in business and what's a waste of time? Only the most important tasks need to go on your list.
The second task is organizing your list and put more detail down. For example, if you know you want to build a website (or work on an existing one), you'll need to write down what exactly needs to be done. Write the outline of your site on your list, and just work on what you can each day.
Typing up your list and printing it out can make it look nicer, but don't waste too much time on this. The main idea is to just keep your tasks organized so you can quickly jump right into working each day without wasting time trying to figure out where you left off.
Another way to be organized is by setting daily habits for things like emails or blog posts. If you are subscribed to groups or posts from message boards, set those up to go to a different folder in your email so you can set them aside for later. When you check your email, answer the important messages first, then get to work. Group and message board posts should be answered after you have "real" work done. The exception to this rule is if you are a moderator or owner - if that's the case, you should make sure you answer them with the rest of your important emails.
The bottom line is making sure you are using the best of what little time you have, and getting straight to work when you do have an hour or two to spare.
